War graves started disappearing from public spaces already last year, but by the end of this year Läänemaa will be free of red monuments and almost 90 World War II victims will have made their way to the cemetery from the heart of Haapsalu.

On April 19, a large red granite monument was removed from the area between the Haapsalu department store and the traffic light, and in its place workers installed a small plaque reading “Victims of World War II.” The monument, which remained in the city center for 41 years, was loaded by workers into a car and taken away. It has been preserved by the Läänemaa Museum.
