Tallinn signs agreement with Viimsi municipality on night bus financing

In today’s session, the city government approved the financing agreement for the night bus line No. 95 between the city of Tallinn and the municipality of Viimsi, which allows residents of the municipality to use the night bus line connecting Balti station and the center of Viimsi.

Deputy mayor Vladimir Svet underlined that Tallinn will definitely continue to develop cooperation with neighboring municipalities, as this way we can ensure functioning connections from which everyone benefits. “It is clear that public transport traffic between neighboring municipalities and the capital is important and we must make an effort to make our connections even better. We have been cooperating with the municipality of Viimsi for a long time, thanks to which bus line no. 1 runs to the center of Viimsi, since January the night bus No. 95 has also been added,” Svet said.

Night bus lines were first tested in Tallinn last year and the pilot project proved to be a success. Since the beginning of this year, night buses have been running all year round and two new lines have been added to Nõmme and Viimsi. The line to Viimsi travels in the city center along Toompuistee, Kaarli, Estonia and Rävala avenues and then reaches the Narva highway via Pronksi street. Afterwards, the bus heads towards Pirita Road and Merivälja Road and makes the last stop in the center of Viimsi.

The mayor of Viimsi Illar Lemetti according to him the night bus reaches Viimsi thanks to the good cooperation with the city of Tallinn. “We started the relevant talks a few months ago and after successful negotiations the plan was implemented. The municipality of Viimsi helps to co-finance the project for several reasons. First of all because every weekend in the capital not all events affecting the children of Viimsi could finish by midnight. Night public transport offers children in Viimsi more flexibility in planning their activities. Secondly, it also helps increase safety,” the mayor explained.

Tallinn’s 2024 budget includes 830,000 euros for the night bus service. The municipality of Viimsi pays Tallinn for traffic on the territory of the municipality.

As of January 1, there are six night bus lines in Tallinn: line no. 91 goes to Mustamäe, the no. 92 in Väike-Õismäe, the no. 93 in Pelguranna, the n. 94 in Priisle, the no. 95 in Viimsi center and n. 96 in Nõmme. The starting point of the night lines is at Balti station, at the County line stop. Night buses run in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday from 1.30am to 4.30am with an interval of 30 minutes (the last departure is only from Balti station heading out of the city). Timetables can be found at bus stops and on the website
