From Personal Haven to Public Wonderland: A Mother’s Fairy Trail for Her Autistic Son
The Enchanted South Mountain Fairy Trail
Therese Ojibway had a magical encounter while hiking in the woods, stumbling upon twigs intertwined like a fairy swing, sparking memories of her childhood creations. Her son, Clinton Craig, diagnosed with autism at a young age, found solace and joy in nature during their frequent hikes in the 2,110-acre South Mountain Reservation in Millburn, N.J.
Creating a whimsical world for her son, Ojibway crafted miniature fairy furniture using natural materials found in the environment. What started as a tiny sofa made of tree bark and moss cushions evolved into a fairyland of enchanting houses hidden within trees and root systems along the South Mountain Fairy Trail.
Community Involvement
Recognizing the growing wonderland, Ojibway sought approval from the South Mountain Conservancy in 2011 to continue her creative endeavor. Volunteers and community members joined in, contributing mini items to enhance the fairy trail experience. Today, over 80 fairy dwellings adorn the trail, captivating visitors from near and far.
Passing the Torch
After her husband’s passing, Ojibway and her son relocated to Michigan, leaving behind a beloved community treasure. Concerned about the trail’s future, she was heartened when Julie Gould and Beth Kelly stepped up to become the new keepers of the fairyland. With the help of Scout troops and students, they maintain the trail, ensuring its magic remains intact.
