A home in Naples, Fla., got an unexpected delivery from outer space last month when an object thought to be a discarded battery from the International Space Station smashed through the roof and two floors of the house.
“It almost hit my son,” said homeowner Alejandro Otero. “He was two rooms over and heard it all. What are the chances of something landing on my house with such force to cause so much damage? I’m super grateful that nobody got hurt.”

Lowering the temperature freezes faster
Myth. Dramatically decreasing the air conditioning temperature does not necessarily mean the room will cool faster. In reality the device will run at the same speed until the desired temperature is reached. This can waste energy and possibly cause discomfort when the environment becomes too cold.
Ideally, set the thermostat temperature to a comfortable level and keep that setting constant. This allows the air conditioner to adjust the temperature gradually, without overloading the system or unnecessarily increasing energy consumption. It is worth remembering that for the device to work efficiently the room must be properly sealed.
“The more BTUs, the better”?
Myth. In air conditioning systems, the BTUs is used to indicate the cooling or heating capacity of an appliance. Since this is a power measurement, it must be correctly related to the dimensions of the room in which the device will be positioned. For example, 12 thousand BTU systems have the power necessary to cool rooms of up to 20 m2.
However, it’s worth remembering that appliances with a higher BTU capacity are generally more expensive to purchase and operate. In other words, air conditioning can consume more energy and, as a result, increase electricity costs in the long run.
Additionally, these devices tend to cool small rooms very quickly and will likely shut down before removing all the moisture from the room. Therefore, before purchasing air conditioning, The user is advised to consult a table that relates the number of BTUs to the space.
Does the set temperature indicate how warm the room will be?
A common myth about air conditioners is that the temperature set on the thermostat directly represents the temperature the room will reach. However, in reality, the number indicated indicates the goal for which the device is programmed.
In practice, when this set temperature is reached, the thermostat sends a signal to the climate control system to stop the cooling cycle and go into standby mode. The detail, however, is that this value may never be reached, making the air conditioning compressor work continuously, with a consequent increase in energy consumption.

For as little as 20 yuan (£2.20), Chinese netizens can create a moving digital avatar of their loved one, according to some services advertised online. So this year, to mark tomb-sweeping festival on Thursday, innovative mourners are turning to artificial intelligence to commune with the departed.
At the more sophisticated end of the spectrum, the Taiwanese singer Bao Xiaobai used AI to “resurrect” his 22-year-old daughter, who died in 2022. Despite having only an audio recording of her speaking three sentences of English, Bao reportedly spent more than a year experimenting with AI technology before managing to create a video of his daughter singing happy birthday to her mother, which he published in January.
“People around me think I’ve lost my mind,” Bao said in an interview with Chinese media. But, added: “I want to hear her voice again.”
