A small spacecraft the size of a shoebox delivered this week to ESA’s Hera mission promises to make a giant leap forward in planetary science. Once the Juventas CubeSat passes through the Hera spacecraft deposited near the binary asteroid system Didymos, it will make the first radar measurement inside an asteroid, looking deep into the heart of the pyramid-sized moon Dimorphos.

“Today’s asteroids are fragments of collisions between the original building blocks of our entire solar system. If we can see what an asteroid’s interior looks like, we can gain valuable insights into the evolution of the solar system and ways to defend our planet,” explains Michael Kueppers, scientist on ESA’s Hera project. “Is this asteroid a massive monolith or rather a pile of rubble held together by its gravity? The answer to this question has practical implications for how incoming asteroids might be deflected away from Earth in the future.”

The Juventas CubeSat is only 37x23x10 cm in size and was designed for ESA by the Luxembourg company GomSpace. The spacecraft integration will take place at GomSpace’s headquarters in Denmark. The company specializes in CubeSats: small, low-budget satellites assembled from standardized 10 cm boxes, which are usually intended to be placed in orbit around the Earth.
