Ariane 6 Takes Flight: Europe’s New Heavy-Lift Rocket Begins Maiden Launch Campaign
Europe’s iconic Ariane 5 launch vehicle bid farewell on July 5, 2023, marking the end of its successful run as the continent’s first heavy-lift rocket. However, Arianespace wasted no time in ushering in a new era with the debut of its enhanced heavy-lift workhorse: the Ariane 6.
The highly anticipated maiden launch campaign for the Ariane 6 kicked off as the central core and boosters were transported to the ELA-4 launch complex in Kourou, French Guiana. This momentous occasion solidified a significant milestone in Europe’s space exploration journey.
On Wednesday, April 24th, a crane diligently positioned and installed the central core of Ariane 6 onto the launch table at ELA-4. The core is composed of both the main booster and upper stage components crucial for propelling this next-generation rocket into orbit.
Arianespace then focused on delivering two P120C solid rocket boosters over two days. These boosters were meticulously mounted to flank either side of the central core on top of the launch table. Together, they form what is known as the Ariane 62 configuration that will spearhead this groundbreaking mission.

The innovative design principles behind Ariane 6 closely parallel its predecessor. It remains a two-stage rocket, propelled by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen engines. The first stage features the upgraded Vulcain 2.1 motor, an enhanced version of the highly successful Vulcain 2 engine utilized by the Ariane 5. Meanwhile, the second stage boasts an all-new Vinci engine capable of generating a formidable 180 kN of thrust in vacuum conditions.

The main danger lies in collisions between satellites and space debris. The risk of collision is particularly high in certain areas, such as low Earth orbit, where most satellites are concentrated.
Preventative measures: deorbiting satellites
France has established itself as one of the pioneers in the fight against the proliferation of space debris.
