Years of work by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has identified deficiencies in Tesla’s Autopilot system. The investigation case remains open until the effectiveness of Tesla’s repairs can be verified. The automaker sends a software update to fix the problems.
“Automation technology has the potential to improve safety, but only if used responsibly,” the agency said. “Today’s investigation is an example of how automated systems can be improved to prioritize safety,” the organization added, in which Tesla says it plans to fix the issue with a software update starting Dec. 12.
The current bug fix is the second this year related to Tesla’s Autopilot system. Autopilot has come under scrutiny after hundreds of crashes. Some of them even ended up dead. Autopilot is part of every new Tesla. The vehicle uses cameras to simulate the speed of vehicles in surrounding traffic. Among other things, it helps the driver on clearly marked roads.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched its first investigation into Autopilot after a fatal crash in 2016. The agency has opened more than 50 cases related to crashes involving Tesla cars and Autopilot.
