Test Drive: The new Ford Ranger isn’t cheap, but it’s a lot of car

The Ford Ranger pick-up looks a bit like a truck, as does the richly equipped Wildtrak version, but at the same time for 53,900 euros you can buy both an off-road vehicle and a small truck at the same time.

The top-of-the-line V-6 version of the Ford Ranger (and its sister model, the Volkswagen Amarok, both recently named Pickup Truck of the Year) has that nice feel that only a relatively large, multi-cylinder powerplant can deliver as soon as you press the start button: not the tense tremor of a four-cylinder, but a soft and powerful, sometimes even muffled hum coming from under the hood.

The Amarok will only be sold with this engine, at least initially, unlike Ford, which also offers a 2-liter R-4 turbodiesel with outputs of 170 and 205 hp. The big-engine Ranger is only available in a four-door, five-seat long cab, unlike its weaker cousins, which can also be purchased with a short and semi-long cab.
