The Animal Protection Association invites you to celebrate New Year’s Eve in a way that does not scare animals and birds

For all animals and birds, according to Margit Midro, head of direct care of the Estonian Animal Protection Association, fireworks are something completely incomprehensible and therefore cause fear and stress. The first reaction of most animals to such a phenomenon is to flee. Birds fly high in panic and often regardless of where and without considering their energy reserves, which is why many of them can die. Animals run in an unknown direction, so they can get lost or put themselves in danger.

The Animal Protection Society recommends celebrating New Year’s Eve in a way that is less disturbing to animals. You can purchase silent fireworks, enjoy a light show instead of a salute, or stick to sparklers. Fireworks should be avoided near protected natural and landscape areas, protected areas, zoos and parks, as well as animal farms, stables and animal shelters.

Pets should be brought into the house on New Year’s Eve and do everything possible to spend the New Year stress-free. Pets should absolutely not be taken outside during fireworks. So that the fireworks do not disturb the animals, tire them on the same day with a walk, active activity or mental game; accompany farm animals to the barn or stable during fireworks, keep pets indoors as well, set the radio or television to play for the animals at a moderate volume; cover the interior windows so that flashes of light do not enter; spend time with them yourself and provide a fun activity.

Before the New Year it is worth checking whether the pet is microchipped and registered. In this way everything has been done so that the animal can quickly return home in case of loss. If an animal goes missing on New Year’s Eve, the search should be launched immediately and the nearest animal shelter and local administration should be notified.
