A CHANGE IS COMING ⟩ The price of construction wood has dropped downwards! An expert publishes a prediction for the new year

According to Toomas Tauk, director of Puumarket, the price of construction wood is almost half cheaper than last year, but producers have reduced volumes, so a small price increase can be expected at the beginning of the year.

According to Toomas Tauk, due to the decrease in local and especially Scandinavian construction volumes, the price of wood is almost 50% cheaper than a year ago.

“Timber moved completely in the opposite direction to general inflation throughout the year and stopped in the summer. If in the last six months there was clearly an oversupply of timber on the market, now production quantities have are reduced and it looks like the price base is either here or bottomed out in the fall,” Tauk says.

Wood producers currently expect a 5-10% change for the first quarter, but no larger price increase is expected for the next six months. The prices of building materials in general have also fallen in the last year and there is no sign of a sharp increase in prices in this sector either.

According to the director of Puumarket, large materials producers will keep their factories open, volumes will be adjusted according to demand and a new cycle of economic growth is expected.

“On the construction market there is a tough price fight on a large scale and profit margins have decreased, which is why now is the most favorable time to build for the customer in years. Material availability and prices are good and builders they are flexible,” Tauk said.
