The couple’s gold medal returns to Italy | figure skating

The Italian pair Lucrezia Beccari – Matteo Guarise won the pairs competition at the European Figure Skating Championships in Kaunas.

Beccari and Guarise were in third place after the short program with 67.05 points, but in the free program the Italian pair set a new personal best with 132.14 points. With this they exceeded their previous record in the free skate by almost seven points. The winning pair scored 199.19 points after two routines.

While 20-year-old Beccari won his first European medal at his second attempt, 35-year-old Guarise got his first medal at his 10th attempt.

Representatives of Georgia Anastasiia Metelkina – Luka Berulava won the silver medal with 196.14 points. The Georgians led with 71.30 points after the short program, but Metelkina fell in the free program, which is why they achieved the fifth best score in the free program (124.84).

The Georgians were followed by last year’s EC silver medalists, Italians Rebecca Ghilardi and Filippo Ambrosini with 195.68 points. The Hungarian pair Maria Pavlova – Aleksei Sviatchenko (194.02) was the first without a medal, while the German tandem Minerva Fabienne Hase – Nikita Volodin (190.69) completed the top five.

The Italian pair Sara Conti – Niccolò Macii, who took to the ice as reigning champions, finished in sixth place with 187.25 points.
