The family opera “The Little Chimney Sweep” premieres in the large hall of the EMTA | Theater

This week, the family opera “The Little Chimney Sweep” will be performed in the large hall of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater. The story of childhood, difficult circumstances and the power of cooperation will be brought to the stage by EMTA students and alumni, as well as soloists from the Estonian National Opera and the Estonian Radio Children’s Song Studio.

The work “The Little Chimney Sweep” by Benjamin Britten and Eric Crozier tells the viewer the story of regaining one’s childhood. Despite the time it arrived on stage, according to director Liis Kolle it is not a Christmas story.

“Attention is focused on a very serious issue like the use of child labor. Maybe it doesn’t strike us when we look around, but in the world, as we know, there is a lot of concern about it,” Kolle said.

For Uku Sander Leisalu, the singer of the Estonian Boys’ Choir, the best part of the show is his beautiful music. Leisalu plays little Sam, whose father sells him as an apprentice to a chimney sweep.

“The chimney sweeps want Sam to start sweeping chimneys on his own and send him to the chimney where he gets stuck. The other boys who are there notice, save him and try to help him and create a better life for him,” the young man said actor.

“For my part, I would dedicate this production to all the children who cannot participate in such a project, but who might want to. And if the children come to see it, they might have a little faith that it is possible to do something with an effort common and something also depends on the children, a lot in this piece,” Kolle added.

“The Little Chimney Sweep” is played in the EMTA Great Hall and in Vanemuis during December and January.
