The former president of the Bank of Latvia was sentenced to six years in prison for accepting bribes

Furthermore, the Riga District Court banned Rimšēvičs from working in the public sector for five years and also confiscated his properties, including a house near Riga, an apartment in Jūrmala and 25,000 euros in bank accounts.

Shortly after the verdict was announced, Rimšēvičs told reporters that he would appeal. He maintained his innocence throughout the five years he was under investigation.

Rimšēvics was arrested in 2018 when the Latvian Office for Prevention and Combating Corruption began to suspect suspicious transactions in the banking sector. In the meantime, the sector has undergone a profound purge and the Rimšēvics ruling represented the long-awaited final step.

The actual process began four years ago, but not everything went smoothly. The first judge, for example, announced his resignation even though he was still young and at the beginning of his career. Initially the case was supposed to be heard by the Riga court, since the crimes were committed there, but the case was instead sent to Jūrmala – Rimšēvičs is said to have received some gifts at a seaside resort there. From there, however, the matter finally returned to the Riga court.
