Nearly 300 women from all over the world gathered in the Kudujate Koopiaklub and called on the Estonian people to wear woolen church gloves with national motifs on the republic’s birthday.
In the past, women belonging to the Kudujate Koopiaklub knitted Muhu socks, which could be admired in the world’s largest exhibition of Muhu socks at the Estonian National Museum. However, for Anu Raua’s 80th birthday, a large number of gloves with a perforation pattern were ready. Now these women challenge us all.
“The Kudujate Koopiaklubi has launched an appeal for people to wear Estonian church gloves on February 24. And everyone can choose the gloves based on their belonging: where their ancestors come from, which region they feel the best connection with”, he stated Heleri Jürisson, leader of the Kudujate Koopiaklubi.
It is often asked what kind of Estonian glove is, if the Estonian glove is blue and white? But that’s not really the case.
“Estonians in the old days were quite sedentary and for this reason these gloves were different in each parish. The models could have been different, even the colors chosen and considered the most beautiful could have been different. The Estonian glove is definitely made of wool, this is the very first condition, and it was often quite tightly woven. Perhaps the Estonians really liked this design and for this reason the glove had to be knitted quite tightly with a rather fine yarn, with a rather thin thread.” Definitely the favorite color combination was sheep white and dark blue. Gloves were believed to bring good luck and protect from all evil and evil. And that is what we would like today too,” said Anu Pink, heritage technologist and leader of the Kudujate Koopiaklub.
The bench hopes that wearing the national gloves will once again become a daily habit. The collection of the Estonian National Museum has more than 4,000 pairs of national gloves, the museums’ MUIS web portal helps to make choices on models.
