The new Polish prime minister is working to release the frozen funds

The bloc’s leader said he would transfer 5 billion euros of Poland’s 60 billion euro share of the bloc’s COVID recovery stimulus to Warsaw. Varsavi asked for another 7 billion euros.

“I welcome your commitment to putting the rule of law at the top of your government’s agenda,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a joint press conference with Poland’s new prime minister, Donald Tusk. “We have to make up for lost time”

He also praised Warsaw’s aim to join the bloc’s European Public Prosecutor’s Office, which the previous government had refused to do.

Tusk promised that Poland would rebuild democratic institutions after years of rule marked by bitter battles with the EU over democratic rights.

Poland must take measures to restore the independence of the judiciary to receive more EU funds. According to Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders it will take “some time”.

“There is a commitment. The message is very important in terms of the principles of the rule of law,” Reynders said. “But this is not enough. We need to see reforms. It will take time.”
