The search for the woman who drowned in Emajões has been interrupted. Police: the situation can become dangerous for divers

According to Baldur Pilden, operations director of the southern prefecture, on the night of the accident the police brought a diver with them to search for the woman in the water. The searches with the help of a diver and sonar continued yesterday.

“A relatively large area was checked, but the woman was not found,” Pilden said. “The strong water current makes it very difficult for divers to work in this place, and can also become dangerous for divers. Furthermore, given the search area, it can be assumed that the water current may have brought the woman far from this place, which is why this morning we decided not to continue the search with divers and sonar.”

Pilden added that although the underwater search has been called off, police are still looking for the person until they are found. “If new information comes in, it will be verified and, if necessary, active searches will be started again,” she said.

The incident was reported to the emergency room at 4.40pm on Wednesday. According to the caller’s account, a man could be seen on the ice under the Friendship Bridge screaming for help. Rescuers and the police attended the accident.

“It turned out that two people who had come from Eden and wanted to cross Emajõgi had sunk in the ice,” Pilden said on Wednesday. “One of them, a 51-year-old man, managed to get back on the ice, but the 76-year-old woman who was with him sank under water. Rescuers from the rescue team began to search for the woman in the water, but she has not been found and unfortunately there is no hope of finding her alive now,” the operations manager said at the time.

Pilden told Delfi that, as far as police know, the man and woman who crossed the ice knew each other. “It is known that they were from the Annelinna area. They wanted to go to a friend and there was a shorter route across the ice.”
