The new smart road has divided the municipality of Põlva into two factions Estonia

The smart road built in Põlva, two and a half kilometers long, arouses conflicting opinions among locals. Some consider a solution that notifies the driver and measures the average speed of vehicles a necessary investment, while others do not approve of the expense.

On the road through the city of Põlva, 14 pedestrian crossings are now equipped with cameras and sensors that warn the driver of pedestrians crossing the roadway and measure the average radiation of vehicles. In the future, sensors at the intersection should be able to communicate independently with the car.

“Given that this is the main street of Põlva and schools operate here, we are talking about making the route to school safe for 1,000 children, as well as all other citizens,” said Martti Rõigas, mayor of Põlva.

Although the Targa tee development was approved by the Council, the opposition does not believe such use of the money is appropriate.

“The first disadvantage of the road was the budget of 170,000 euros, of which almost half is the Municipality’s share, half is the European Union’s share, but in the end it is all our money and 2.5 kilometers with the traffic density of the city of Põlva does not seem smart at all,” said Põlva city councilor Janno Simso.

What feelings and thoughts does this clever street evoke? “Pretty positive, now at least the driver can see that something is flashing, so someone is crossing the road. In my opinion it’s an absolutely good thing,” said Kahro, a resident of Põlva.
