The Nigerian army accidentally killed 85 people in a drone attack

Residents of Tudun Biri village in Kaduna state had gathered to celebrate a festival called Mauludi when around 9pm they heard what sounded like the sound of a plane followed by a huge explosion, the Guardian reports.

According to local news channels, villagers have fled the area fearing further attacks. Representatives of the army and the Kaduna State government met with village elders and promised compensation.

The Nigerian military said it was carrying out a “routine mission against terrorists which inadvertently involved members of the community”. The army did not report the number of casualties or explain how the incident occurred, but local residents said 85 people were killed, many of them women and children.

According to information there were more than 60 injured.

The Nigerian armed forces regularly strike Boko Haram jihadists and other armed militants operating in the north of the country. Recently, the bloodiest fighting occurred in the northwest of Africa’s most populous country.
