Horton, 27, cited a lack of motivation as the reason for his sudden retirement.
“I wanted to compete in Paris, but I couldn’t find the motivation to do it. I always want to do my best and I’m not someone who just wants to be on the team, so it’s the right time to stop,” Horton said in a press release from ‘Australian Swimming Association.
“It was a privilege to represent Australia and wear the green and gold jersey… I just hope Australia feels proud that I have made them proud,” added the Olympic champion.
Horton competed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2021 Tokyo Olympics, earning a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle in his Olympic debut. In Tokyo, she added to her trophy cabinet with a bronze medal in the 4×200 freestyle relay.
In addition to her success at the Olympics, Horton has won numerous medals at the World Championships, Pacific Championships and Commonwealth Games throughout her career.
