The Polish Minister of Culture has announced the liquidation of state-owned media companies

This move means the liquidation of Telewizja Polska SA (TVP), Polskie Radio SA and Polska Agencja Prasowa SA (PAP).

Sienkiewicz explained that the purpose of such a drastic step is to ensure the continuation of the activity of these companies, facilitate the necessary restructuring and avoid layoffs due to the suspension of financing.

“The owner can revoke the liquidation status at any time,” Sienkiewicz said.

Duda, however, strongly condemned the actions of the new Polish government, which included the rapid dismissal of the CEOs of all these state-owned media companies and the appointment of new boards of directors. According to Duda this is a clear violation of the Constitution. He pointed out that I was circumventing the legal rules governing the management of these media companies, which led to a situation that he called anarchy.

The Law and Justice Party (PiS), in power from 2015 to 2023, organized protests against changes in the national media and occupied the buildings of media channels.

During the PiS government, state media, and in particular TVP’s main evening news program and the TVP Info news channel, were accused of turning into propaganda platforms for PiS.

The new government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk has promised to make state media a reliable source of information.

The law stipulates that state media maintain neutrality and do not favor any political party, but in reality these publications have been distorted in favor of those in power. PiS control over TVP has been much more evident than that of previous governments. PiS also changed the media law and established a media monitoring body. This allowed PiS to replace the management of media companies and fill the public media with “politically correct” journalists.
