Ott finished the preliminaries with a time of 7.47, two hundredths of a second faster than the record set last year.
In the final he cut the record by one hundredth and achieved a new best of 7.46.
At the U20 European Athletics Championships, held in Jerusalem in August, 16-year-old sprinter Miia Ott was overshadowed by several Estonian medal winners with her sixth place. By then, she had improved her 100-meter personal best by more than half a second in a year.
Ott, who has been training according to Urmas Põldre’s advice since childhood, changed instructors this summer, his new coach is Maris Mägi. Mägi has held the Estonian 400 m hurdles record with 56.56 since 2013, and was also part of the 4×400 m relay record which stands to this day. On the smooth stadium circuit, Mägi occupies second place in Estonia’s all-time rankings with 52.21, after Egle Uljas (51.91).
