Thousands of doctors have gone on the longest strike ever seen in Britain

Junior doctors plan to strike until next Tuesday morning. This in turn affects tens of thousands of patients, whose appointments and operations will now be cancelled. Hospitals are trying to keep emergency and obstetric care running with the help of senior doctors and other healthcare workers.

Julian Hartley, chief executive of the NHS Providers union, said the strike took place at one of the most difficult times of the year – it was Christmas and New Year and flu and coronavirus were also spreading. “The strike has a significant impact on patients,” he said.

Health workers in Britain have gone on strike over the past year with varying degrees of success. They want a higher salary because their current salary no longer covers the increased cost of living.

The government has promised to increase the salaries of nurses, ambulance workers and senior doctors, but pay negotiations with junior doctors have reached an impasse. The country is threatening to interrupt negotiations due to the strike. However, the Association of Junior Doctors does not plan to resume negotiations until the state presents a credible offer.
