Ukrainian orphans learn to cope with the traumas of war in pain camps

Last year, the story of 15-year-old Yuri Nechiporenko, whose father was killed before his eyes in Butsha, was widely covered in the media. Yuri had taken to the streets with his father Ruslan on his bicycle to check whether the rumors about humanitarian aid arriving were true. They were stopped by a Russian soldier who opened fire on them. Yuri, hit by a bullet, played dead next to his dejected and bleeding father until the soldier left and then ran away.

38-year-old businesswoman Oksana Lebedeva was inspired by Yuri’s interviews, realizing that thousands of Ukrainian children are facing trauma similar to Yuri’s, and with each subsequent day of war, the number of orphans in Ukraine increases, she reports The Economist. She founded the NGO Gen.Ukrainian, which organizes three-week camps for Ukrainian children to deal with grief and other war trauma.
