Unstoppable 85 ton projectiles. Almost every second truck on Estonian roads is dangerously overloaded

The problem of truck overloading is not new, it has been talked about since the 1990s, but according to a study recently completed by the Transport Authority, the actual number of car trains moving on the roads, their gross weight and Axle loads were analyzed for the first time. Data from national weighing stations for the years 2019-2021 and data collected at temporary weighing stations on bridges in 2018-2019 were used as a basis. This is an important nuance, because the measurement points of the bridge survey were located mainly on main and secondary roads, which reflected the traffic composition of these roads. The comparison of the data was surprising, because it turned out that a large part of heavy trucks with a gross weight much higher than the permitted gross weight move precisely on secondary and secondary roads. This means that transport companies overload trucks carrying out domestic transport. International trucks crossing Estonia generally do not exceed weight limits, because their weight is checked on ships and at customs points.
