Võro: Being an athlete is a privilege and I want to enjoy it for as long as possible Athletics

Sprinter Õilme Võro said after the successful start of the season that, although there were gaps in the preparation period, the experience helps to fill them and not worry too much.

Sprinter Õilme Võro won the 60-meter race on Tuesday evening with a time of 7.33 in the competition in Tampere. The personal best set at last year’s Võro indoor EC is just four hundredths of a second faster. Võro is satisfied with the start of the season, especially considering that just a few days ago he was hit by an annoying stomach virus.

“In terms of the result, I am very satisfied, technically not so much,” Võro told Vikerraadio. “But it’s nothing new regarding the first start, a year and a half has already passed since the last individual start, these first heats are always a bit rusty. You want to be successful and you don’t know exactly what the situation is, so subconsciously I tense up. But when he leaves, the reaction was good for me and I made a good performance for myself.”

“The race program was relatively open until the last moment, the main focus was the search for starts,” continued Võro. “Technically, the goal is to regain the laxity that I achieved in the summer. It’s difficult to achieve that something during the indoor season, because the distance is so short and sharpness is perhaps more important. In the second half of the distance, you still need a step longer and looser muscles, it is definitely expected to find it.”

Võro heads hopefully towards the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow at the beginning of March. The World Cup norm is 7.19. At the same time, the sprinter says that in the long term the goal remains the summer EC and that there is no point in trying to reach the indoor WC.

“I don’t put my stamp on it, I have to get there for sure. At the last World Cup the norm was like this, so I thought I’d help: it’s a fantastic moment, who can handle it! Now I think my level has improved too, whether it’s a huge success. I’m keeping an eye on it, but I’m not obsessed with it. The summer season is coming with great momentum, the European Championships are already at the beginning of June. You have to be ready above all. If you qualify for the World Cup , it’s going to be incredible. It’s nice, but I won’t limit myself to that,” Võro confirmed.

According to Võro there were training gaps even during the preparation period, but this does not worry him too much. “I already have a lot of experience as an athlete. When you reach a certain level, to a certain extent it is also in the muscle memory. For the first time I wasn’t too worried about taking three steps back if the training cycle was too short. I was calm throughout the preparation period, I did a lot when I could, I gave it my all and didn’t push myself too hard. The current form also shows that there is no one way to get into the best shape,” Võro reflects.

“I feel great in my athlete’s skin, my health in general is good, we have had injuries, so I have learned to live with them. I have very good people around me. The more time passes, the more I understand that being an athlete It’s a privilege and I will enjoy it as long as I’m allowed to be an athlete,” concluded the sprinter.
