Zverev led Germany to the tennis semi-finals

In the United Cup tennis team competition in Australia, Germany beat Greece 2:1 to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Greece took the lead after the women’s singles, when world number eight Maria Sakkar managed to beat recently returned Angelique Kerber, 6-0, 6-3. The tie was decided by the men’s singles, where world number seven Alexander Zverev beat world number six Stefanos Tsitsipas 6:4, 6:4.

Zverev soon took over in mixed doubles, teaming with Laura Siegemund to beat Sakkar and Petros Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-3 and send Germany to the semifinals, where they will face hosts Australia.

Zverev won five out of six matches during the tournament, the only defeat he had to accept in the group doubles match against France. “A few days ago I wasn’t sure whether we would reach the quarterfinals or not. I made it clear to the team that we deserve to play the quarterfinals,” Zverev said.

“It was a very important match. We had a lot of weight on our shoulders. Apparently we are very dangerous if we lose,” Siegemund added.

The semi-finals of the United Cup will be played on Saturday. In the second match Poland and France will meet.
