Are you looking for ideas to decorate the Christmas table? View the interior designer’s advice and the inspiring photo gallery

In order for the table decoration to go more smoothly, the interior designer recommends setting the theme of the decorations, after which the decoration will take place as if by itself. And the best thing: if you use a little creativity, you can decorate a memorable Christmas table in a very affordable way.

“The choice of theme gives a lot of good ideas and helps to create a more harmonious result – this applies both to the decoration of the party table and to the whole house. And it can also give you interesting ideas for creating a menu,” says the designer interior designer IKEA Anneli Saluste.

If, for example, you choose the fairytale theme, you can decorate the Christmas table with small Christmas trees, Christmas decorations or even toys and create your own little fairytale world. However, if we are talking about traditions or folklore, textiles with classic or folk patterns, linen napkins and shades of red and green inextricably linked to Christmas may come to mind. You can also decorate the dishes with handwritten cards and fir straw decorations. The theme can also be snow, which you can easily combine with a more modern style and use white and silver accessories. Additionally, glass, porcelain, white candles and even small decorative Christmas trees help create the atmosphere of a snowy forest.

Choose a maximum of 3-4 colors

Regardless of the theme chosen, the interior designer reminds us that using too many different colors and decorations can make the Christmas table seem cluttered. Instead, he chooses up to 4 shades and sticks with them.

“If you like to decorate the table abundantly and also love colorful tableware, use a single-color tablecloth to balance the overall impression. And vice versa: if the tablecloth is full of color, let it shine and look for decorations and dishes in more modest colors “If you want your home to have a more harmonious look, use the same colors for the decorations placed on the Christmas tree, on the festive table and on the windowsills and also choose fabrics of the same color,” said the architect of ‘interior.

He also advises you to review the decorations you have acquired in previous years before you start decorating the table. “You don’t necessarily need to buy all new things to set a memorable Christmas table. Maybe you just need a new brightly colored tablecloth to freshen up the overall impression, which beautifully highlights the white tableware or, for example, new napkins made of fabric. You can create a really interesting combination by complementing existing dishes with a couple of new elements. Christmas lights also help to create the right holiday atmosphere.”

Find decorations in nature

Christmas table decorations can also be brought from the woods – why not go for a short walk and collect pine cones, green fir branches or even twigs, which you can put in a vase or put in an arrangement in another way and decorate.

“The smaller branches can be used to make a personalized bouquet to decorate each guest’s plate. Tie the branches together with a ribbon, attach a card with the name to them and place the bouquet on a plate. Don’t forget that they are the small things, like setting up a place with a name for guests, that warm the heart and show everyone that they are expected and welcome”, says Saluste.

Decorations found in nature create a Christmas atmosphere in the house, for example a spruce branch gives the room a more cozy and festive look and brings the scent of spruce into the room. To prevent thorns or dirt from penetrating the food, fir branches, garlands and artificial plants can also be used on the party table to avoid further mess, which can also be used during the following holidays.

A magical spark

“Several candles and decorative candlesticks are also indispensable on the Christmas table, which create a festive atmosphere and a festive atmosphere. Of course, be careful with wax candles and make sure that the decorations are not too close to the flame. I also remind you that the candles must be at least 7 cm apart from each other. And if there are pets or small children in the house, it is safer to choose battery-powered LED candles”, underlines Saluste.

According to the interior designer, LED garlands and battery-operated light chains can also be used to decorate the table. They can be placed on the table along the entire length of the table or hung from branches placed in a vase. The light chain can also be placed under the glass dome. In order for the house to have a festive and unified look before the holidays, the same bright decoration can be used in several places, for example, in the corridor, on the windowsills and on the sofa table.
