Depardieu’s rape accusation puts the French at loggerheads

The Depardieu case has polarized French society. On the one hand, there is a call for an end to the “lynching” and the cancellation of the actor, and it is believed that his actions can only be judged in court. For example, an open letter published in Le Figaro in support of Depardieu was signed by 50 public figures, including former first lady and musician Carla Bruni, as well as famous actresses Charlotte Rampling, Carole Bouquet, Nathalie Baye and Pierre Richa. In response, public letters have been published denouncing years of unacceptable behavior, the famous Grévin Museum in Paris has removed Depardieu’s wax figure from its exhibition, and several people associated with film and television have said they will refuse to work with him in the future. There was also a more distant reaction: Canada stripped Depardieu of the National Order of Quebec.
