Italian media: the legendary car manufacturer returns to the World Rally Championship

According to experienced Italian journalist Marco Giordo, Lancia plans to return to the World Rally Championship with its new Ypsilon, which will be launched in 2024 and will be a Rally2 car.

The testing and development program is expected to begin as early as this year, and the debut in the WRC2 class could take place in the 2025 season.

Lancia has been part of the Stellantis group since 2021. Meanwhile, Lancia has appointed Luca Napolitano as its new CEO, who has taken on the responsibility of bringing the Italian brand back into motorsport.

Lancia participated in the World Rally Championship in the 1970s and 1980s and again in the early 1990s until retiring from motor racing in 1993. This famous automotive brand won a total of ten constructors’ championships and four drivers’ championships in the WRC. Finnish driver Juha Kankkunen became world champion with Lancia in 1987 and 1991. Italian legend Miki Biasion won the title in 1988 and 1989.

In the Rally2 class, competition between different manufacturers has intensified in recent years. This year, the new Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 car, developed in Jyväskylä for a year and a half, will make its debut in the World Series.
