Last year there were over 34,000 car insurance news cases

According to statistics from the Road Insurance Fund (LKF), 34,300 road insurance cases occurred in Estonia last year with a total loss of 72 million euros. The average traffic damage in Estonia is now 2100 euros.

According to Andres Piirsalu, member of the LKF board of directors, the traffic situation continues to be negative and shows no signs of improvement.

“Compared to the previous year, the number of road insurance cases is at the same high level, but the total damage has increased by 3%. The average traffic loss in Estonia now amounts to 2,100 euros,” Piirsalu noted.

Furthermore, Estonian vehicles caused 2,600 road accidents abroad, for a total damage of 11 million euros.

Of all road insurance cases, the majority, or 39%, occurred in car parks last year, a total of 13,500 cases with a total loss of €17 million. Over the last ten years, the number of parking accidents has been increasing.

In 2023, the number of collisions during overtaking, lining up and lane departures increased by 3%. There were 3,500 of these cases with a total loss of 10 million euros.

Piirsalu said it was worrying that the number of collisions during overtaking, lining up and lane departures had increased. “These road accidents mostly occur at high speed and their consequences are serious, because in addition to damage to cars, people are often injured too,” she said.

LKF is the keeper of the Road Insurance Register, the Road Insurance Guarantee Fund, the Estonian Green Card Office and the compulsory insurer of vehicles without a road insurance contract. LKF compensates for damage caused by unregistered compulsory insurance and an unidentified vehicle. The LKF also organizes the resolution of road insurance disputes through the road insurance conciliation body.
