Laura Põldvere: I consider myself a Music canvas

The two-time winner of the Estonian song will participate in a major singing competition again this year. Although music is still the most important thing for the singer, according to Laura the imaginative costumes are the icing on the cake with which to give emotions to people.

The singer isn’t sure how many times he has participated in total, but he still sometimes thinks about performing in front of 100 million viewers. Laura went to Eurovision for the first time in Kiev in 2005 with Suntribe. The second time he was accompanied by Koit Toome and in 2017 they also performed in Kiev. “I was recently asked how I would compare the two. It’s so beautiful that they’re like two different people. It’s so beautiful to look back at yourself. This Laura who was 15 or 16 and the story afterward. They’re such powerful experiences that I remember all these moments on stage even in this performance situation,” Laura said in the “Hommik Anuga” studio.

In 2024 Laura will celebrate her 20th year on stage, as she first performed in 2004 in the program “Laulukarussel”. The singer still does not know exactly where she will go next. “For example, this year there’s a really cool show called ‘The Devil and God,’ where I’ll be with dancers and movers. I never thought I’d do something like that again,” Laura said. During her adolescence, she Laura refused and even excluded musical offers. “I knew I was the worst dancer in the world and putting dancing and singing together didn’t really make sense to me,” Laura said.

Clothing is also an important part of Laura’s artistic image. Even though her everyday clothes are simple and the singer confirmed that she even bought her first pair of overalls last year, she doesn’t go on stage in jeans. Her costumes are more of a fun and joyful experiment than a desire to say something. “I consider myself a canvas where, as an artist, I can create splashes of color and colors that give emotions to people. In my adolescence, when I went to a singing competition and everyone else came there in jeans, comfortable clothes, but my diameters they told me that in your heart you want to wear that sexy dress and people will see you when you go on stage before they hear you. Respect those who took their time and came to listen to you. That’s how I got the idea that people can see me,” Laura recalled.

According to the singer, he also likes to notice interesting costumes or hairstyles in other people, because they also give him energy. But he continues to consider music more important than appearance. The outfit is just the icing on the cake.

On January 20th Laura will participate in the semi-finals of the Estonian Song. She didn’t think too much about her options. “If anyone asks me, I will honestly and sincerely say that I am happy to go on stage, I really like this story, I hope it inspires and touches people,” Laura said.
