New contact lenses help prevent vision loss

Glaucoma occurs when the nerve between the eye and the brain becomes damaged by increased intraocular pressure (IOP), usually caused by a buildup of fluid in the front of the eye. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause irreversible vision loss. Glaucoma is sometimes called the “silent thief of sight” because it develops slowly and causes irreparable damage before vision loss occurs. New contact lenses can help detect glaucoma early by measuring the pressure inside the eye and relaying the information to a specialist for evaluation.

The research developed contact lenses called GlakoLens, which have a built-in sensor that collects wireless data that is stored and processed by a wearable electronic system. This data is then provided to the doctor for evaluation. The advantage of GlakoLens over regular eye exams is that IOP measurements can be taken over a longer period of time, which can lead to a more accurate diagnosis.
