President Karis awarded Estonia’s highest military decoration for the first time, awarded to a Ukrainian soldier

“This morning I signed the decision to award the Order of the Eagle First Class with Swords to a Ukrainian soldier. This recognizes the supreme courage of each of those fighting against the enemy who invaded Ukraine, defending the world free and their country”, Estonian President Alar Karis told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who arrived in Tallinn.

“Soldiers win the war and deserve our utmost gratitude and appreciation. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are currently defending their country from Russian aggression. When I say Ukrainian soldier, I mean all types of troops, special forces, territorial defense, volunteers, as well as those who keep the military industry alive. I think of the Ukrainian soldier,” President Karis said.

For ten years, Ukrainians have resisted Russian aggression with admirable courage. “The will to protect Ukrainian society is still strong, the Ukrainian soldier’s will to fight is still ironclad, despite the horrors he has experienced, the loss of loved ones, the devastated cities, the burned houses and the seemingly endless battles,” said the Estonian head of state. .

“In this brutal war started by Russia, we are all allies of each other on the great battlefield, fighting for freedom. Because: by attacking Ukraine, Russia attacks all democratic countries. This is an attack against all of us” , said President Karis. “This war is not something you can get used to and will not resolve itself. The solution, namely the withdrawal of the aggressor, requires the joint effort of all democratic countries. Ukraine must be given what the soldier Ukrainian needs to defend his country.”
