The Chinese electric car maker’s production volume surpasses that of Tesla for the second consecutive year

US electric car maker Tesla did not release full-year figures on Tuesday. However, it is known that Tesla produced 1.35 million cars in the first quarter of 2023. In 2022, Tesla produced a total of 1.37 million cars, less than BYD which produced 1.88 million.

The fact that their price range is lower than that of Tesla has a positive effect on the sales of BYD cars. In addition to the electric version, they also have a so-called hybrid version. In the quarter ended September 30, a fifth of Tesla’s sales came from China. BYD shares fell just over 2% on the Hong Kong stock market Tuesday morning.

Even though BYD’s production surpassed the three million vehicle mark, the company failed to reach Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia’s target of 3.05 million vehicles. The group said it sold 3.02 million vehicles, of which 1.6 million were battery-powered cars and 1.4 million were hybrids. The company will stop producing cars that run only on petrol or diesel in March 2022.

As several manufacturers want to join the rapidly growing electric car market, several companies have launched new electric car models. For example, smartphone maker Xiaomi announced plans last week to launch an electric car to compete with Porsche and Tesla. Li Auto, whose monthly capacity has grown to a record high, also announced that it plans to launch a battery-only vehicle called MEGA on March 1.
