The Estonian artist’s work was selected for the final of the illustration exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair

A total of 3,520 works by artists from 81 countries or regions around the world were submitted to the competition. The jury selected 346 finalists for the final stage of the competition, one of whom is an Estonian illustrator. The definitive list of artists participating in the exhibition will be announced by the end of January.

Marja-Liisa Plats submitted illustrations from Ville Hytönen’s book «A land called Hampampamm» (2023, Koolibri publishing house) to the competition. The book is about a land called Hampampamm, where a diverse group of creatures of all kinds live. Here they found a home Puutobik, Mutipoeg Marakratt, little companions, a girl named Hiisike and the monstrous Kleebo, hidden in the caves behind the salt pans.

The illustration exhibition of the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair was first held in 1967. At the exhibition you can familiarize yourself with the latest world trends in the field of children’s book illustration and discover the work of experienced book artists and talented newcomers. Last year, illustrations from the book “Toru” by Pamela Sameli were selected for the illustration exhibition at the Bologna fair, and in 2022, Estonia was represented at the illustration exhibition by Marja-Liisa Plats’ work on the Triinu Laane’s book “The Cases of Luukere Juhan”.

The children’s book fair will take place in Italy from 8 to 11 am until April 2024.
