The exorbitant salaries of executives at British listed companies are angering staff unions

The FTSE 100 is an index of the London Stock Exchange that tracks the share prices of the 100 largest companies by market capitalisation.

The average salary of FTSE 100 CEOs is £3.81 million (€4.38 million) per year, 109 times higher than the average UK salary of £34,963 (€40,536) per year, has said the Confederation of British Trade Unions. According to their calculations, the CEOs of the FTSE fund companies have already earned more in the first days of the year than the average salaried worker during the year.

The median wage is the wage at which half of the workers earn less and the other half more.

In Estonia, the annual salary of an employee earning an average salary is 18,000 euros.

Salaries for chief executives in the FTSE 100 have risen by an average of 9% since March last year, but the average pay for rank-and-file workers was 6%.

Julia Hoggett, chief executive of the London Stock Exchange, said in May last year that senior executive pay levels were too low and threatened the UK’s ability to attract and retain domestic and international talent, which in turn put jeopardize the economic development of the country. But according to British unions, the pay gap in British society is already too wide and the government should take measures to tackle inequality.
