VIDEO. Tallinn tourism is in hibernation. Hoteliers: January is a disaster

The autumn months of last year were quite difficult for the capital’s hotels and restaurants. The hoteliers themselves say that January is a real disaster. The pre-corona swelling peak is nowhere to be seen yet.

Last month in the historic center you could hear a lot of speeches in foreign languages. Along with Finns and Latvians, people from further afield are also encouraged to come to Tallinn. However, there is still a long way to go to reach pre-coronavirus levels.

“But throughout the year it’s nice that the Germans also came. The Germans were in third place throughout the year, and suddenly the Americans came back too,” said Külli Karing, president of the Association of Estonian tourism businesses.

“Hotels in Tallinn are not full, hotels have not yet recovered from the post-corona period. A quarter to 30 percent of foreign tourists are missing this year,” said Killu Maidla, CEO of the Estonian Hotel Association and restaurants.

If last Christmas month you could hear a lot of conversations in foreign languages in Tallinn hotels and restaurants, now it’s here, as they say in tourism low season, quiet month. You just have to survive January. As far as catering is concerned, a sharp decline was recorded in the month of Christmas. Company parties were half the size of a year ago.

“The parties that were there, you felt the budgets were smaller, they didn’t want to spend a lot, and that leaves its mark,” Maidla said. If last year’s winter showed a strong post-coronavirus recovery in the hospitality sector, January this year can be called a disaster. “January and February, however, the results on currently available hotel reservations are quite poor. We don’t think there will be many more,” Maidla said.

If we get through the winter, the situation is expected to improve in the spring. “Advance bookings are in a little better shape, here too we see a quiet recovery of groups and larger orders. The pace is not quite what we would like,” Maidla said.

“This trend will continue, but at the same time people are becoming more and more courageous. Currently our companies visit fairs, new agreements are made and this suggests that this year will be better,” Karing said.

Travel has not disappeared from the world and people still want to come to Tallinn.
