Norman Mailer, «Naked and Dead»

The book “Naked and Dead”, which made Mailer famous throughout the world, reflects the author’s experiences in the Philippine war zone. The story is about a group of American soldiers sent to conquer an island in the Pacific Ocean. The novel, considered one of the best ever works on World War II, realistically describes the feelings of men caught in the vortex of war in a foreign land. The nature of each character is revealed one by one and in depth. At the end of the book, the reader encounters a variety of diverse and interesting heroes operating in a realistic atmosphere.

According to Anthony Burgess, this work describes the futility of war very well and is a surprisingly mature novel for a young author. “This is still Mailer’s best war novel and certainly the best war novel ever published in the United States,” Burgess said.

Winston Smith works for Oceania’s Ministry of Truth, where his mission is to rewrite history. He is a small cog in the Party machine run by the almighty Big Brother. In a totalitarian society where propaganda, surveillance and censorship reign, Winston finds support in the company of his colleague Julia: love, a little freedom and hope for a better future. But they don’t know that Big Brother keeps an eye on everything and everyone.

“This is one of the few dystopian or cacotopian visions that have changed our habits of thought,” thought Burgess. “You could say that the horrible future Orwell predicted didn’t happen just because he predicted it: we were warned in time.”
