Sailing in the South Pacific: Because of Corona quarantine on the boat

Dhe worldwide travel has come to a standstill – even on the world’s oceans, the supposedly last place of freedom. Austrians Doris Renoldner, 52, and Wolfgang Slanec, 64, are currently anchored in French Polynesia.

They call themselves sea nomads: in 1989 they set out for the first circumnavigation of the world, in 2002 another seven years followed on the ocean. They write about their experiences on the blog seenomaden.at.

But great freedom is a thing of the past: boat quarantine in the South Pacific. In the interview, the two adventurers talk about this special time – and what it is like to be on a small boat as a permanent traveler.

Question: Dear sea nomads, you drove from San Diego to the Marquesas in February. Where exactly are you and how are you?

Sea nomads: We are in the port of Atuona, on the island of Hiva Oa, where Paul Gaugin and Jacques Brel spent their last years. Our crossing to the perhaps most beautiful islands in the South Pacific took 20 days.

But the corona virus has changed the world and our lives drastically in the past two weeks. We have been under boat arrest since March 21. That means we cannot leave our floating home. Quarantine also prevails here.

Question: How do you experience this time right now?

Sea nomads: Here we are locked in seven square meters of living space and are not allowed on land. The cabin has a stiflingly hot 35 degrees Celsius during the day. All island states and ports around us have closed, no one wants to accommodate sailors anymore. There are also no flights back to Europe.

Because of Corona, strict regulations apply to the Germans. It only looks different at the airports

For the first time we are light years away from great freedom. Although we all envy our “exile”, we would rather be in Austria now. We could move more freely in our small apartment with a mini garden in the mountains.

Question: How are your days going now?

Sea nomads: We try to keep to a regular daily schedule: get up early, do gymnastics in the morning, as long as it is cooler, swim, breakfast, at eight o’clock radio with the other 30 yachts that are here with us. We do work on the boat, read a lot, write, cook. Wolfgang climbs into the mast from time to time.

In the evening we usually watch a film to get other thoughts. We listen to a lot of music, read to each other; it is important to use your voice, we sing too!

Question: What is the mood like on the islands right now?

Sea nomads: The Marquesas are high volcanic islands, originally. Six islands in the archipelago are inhabited and belong to French Polynesia. It is lush with mangoes, papayas, bananas, grapefruits, oranges, lemons, avocados.

The locals have been very nice to us so far. Even if they are worried, they know that we sailors are not really dangerous. Everyone who arrives here has been in quarantine for at least 20 days.

Question: At the moment you might think that those who can sail have a clear advantage as a traveler. Is the sea the last bit of freedom and security?

Sea nomads: Viruses are certainly still free at sea, but at the moment you can hardly moor in ports in the Pacific. In general, the regulations change daily. Sailing on is currently prohibited in French Polynesia.

The Polynesians are very afraid of a catastrophe. As long as we don’t catch a virus, everything is fine. But if we needed medical help, we would be better off at home. There is no hospital here.

Question: Don’t you miss friends and family on your travels?

Sea nomads: Of course you miss friends and family, but you always meet other sailors and locals with whom you can make friends. You always have to give up something to win something new.

We wrote many letters on our first long journey. We contacted our parents by phone once a month on average. Today you are worried if you do not get a response to a Whatsapp message immediately.

Question: What is it that keeps drawing you out to sea?

Sea nomads: Curiosity, a thirst for adventure, the view outside the box, beyond the horizon. We humans are nomads, being on the road is actually in our blood. We have been traveling for over 30 years, travel is our life, our destiny. We have about 140,000 nautical miles in our wake.

Question: How long could you survive on your “nomad” without having to moor at a port?

Sea nomads: We currently have food on board for about four months, water is more of a problem for us. We have a water tank of 250 liters, plus canisters, maybe a total of 350 liters of water on board. But we can catch rainwater.

Question: What have been the biggest challenges so far? You were even in the Arctic and the Northwest Passage.

Sea nomads: To make the right decisions at the right moment, to submit to nature. Thank God we have never seen life-threatening situations.

We are both very careful and don’t risk anything. The most violent storm was in Patagonia, we had up to 70 knots, deployed three anchors that thankfully held.

Question: How do you manage to finance these trips?

Sea nomads: We financed our first trip with jobs on the go. Working on other boats, vintage in France and so on. That was not a problem in the 80s and 90s.

It has become more difficult today and we are older. We take fellow sailors on board from time to time. And in Austria we give lectures and have written three books to date. We live very economically.

Question: Is there a message you would like to send from afar in the current situation?

Sea nomads: Persevere, think positive, don’t let yourself get down. We all hope that the exceptional situation will soon relax and normality will return – even if it feels different than before the Corona crisis.

UN organizations are demanding the release of refugees and migrants

In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, four UN organizations have jointly called for the release of all refugees and migrants who would be held in closed facilities or guarded camps. The situation for these people, who are often held in cramped and unsanitary conditions, is particularly worrying, a statement released on Tuesday evening by the UN refugee agency, the International Organization for Migration, the UN Office for Human Rights and the World Health Organization. “With regard to the fatal consequences that a Covid 19 outbreak could have, they should be released without delay.” Above all, children, their families, and those detained without adequate legal bases should be released immediately.

It is vital that everyone, including all refugees and migrants, have equal access to health care and is included in the national responses to the coronavirus, “including prevention, testing and treatment”. “Inclusion will not only protect the rights of refugees and migrants but also health systems and curb the global spread of Covid-19,” the release said.

Vancouver Island: Gray whales off Canada herald the spring

Dhe small town of Ucluelet in the western Canadian province of British Columbia is looking forward to spring these weeks. The weather does not determine when it starts, the whales determine that: only when thousands of gray whales have passed directly off the coast do the seasons change, the locals firmly believe. What the starting signal for the whale watching season is for them and the tourists who have come – in the middle of a nature park on the island of Vancouver Island, the huge island off the west coast of Canada.

The Pacific Rim Whale Festival usually starts. It should have been nice this year. Decorated wagons were ready, costumed foot troops had practiced their steps and chapels had the accompanying music for the move, whale watch companies wanted to present their rubber boats on trailers and throw camels for the children.

The local fire department had stopped a fire truck and even the police wanted to take part in the move instead of guarding it. The go-ahead should have been given on March 20. But then Corona also came to Canada – and the festival was canceled at short notice.

In March, the gray whales pass the coast

The actual main protagonists of this festival, the whales, don’t mind. Because in March the season for whale watching starts regularly off Canada’s west coast. Festival over, festival over. Tourists from all over the world usually travel to see the gray whales.

What is fun for visitors is what Ian McAllister has made his job: every day, the passionate environmentalist observes the gray whales when they appear on the coast in spring.

There’s no question that McAllister, who has written several books on Vancouver Island’s flora and fauna, is also a fan of the annual whale migration. “We are in the middle of the streets of Tofino. And yet we can still see the islands off the coast, the rainforests, the white, sandy beaches from here, ”says McAllister.

The sun is shining, the sky is blue, a perfect day to watch. “That is not always the case,” says McAllister with a smile, “because it often rains over rainforests.”

The “Pacific Rim” on Vancouver Island

This area in the far west of the Canadian province of British Columbia is called the Pacific Rim, the “Pacific Rim” or the “Pacific Rim”. Because west of here comes only water.

In 1977, Canada declared this area a national park to protect native flora and fauna – the northern Pacific is one of the most biodiverse habitats on earth, by water and by land.

The Pacific Rim National Park covers an area of more than 500 square kilometers. Ucluelet is located directly at the park, about half an hour’s drive south of Tofino.

Both places on the west coast of Vancouver Island border directly on the Pacific. At the Pacific Rim, the Pacific Ocean meets the rainforest of Vancouver Island.

The whales migrate from Mexico to the Bering Sea

“Right now, about 17,000 gray whales migrate from their birthplace in Mexico up to the Bering Sea,” says McAllister. This northward hike is the largest mammalian migration in the world.

“And the whales do this tour every year,” adds the whale expert. “That’s why we can see the fountains from the air we breathe these days.”

Gray Whale: The breathing air expelled after the diving process is saturated with moisture, which condenses and becomes visible as a mist fountain

The so-called blow is the exhaled breathing air from whales; it is expelled with high pressure and is saturated with moisture. When the air has left the blowhole, it relaxes, whereby the lower pressure and the lower outside temperature condense the moisture in the breathing air and make it visible as a mist fountain.

Ian McAllister looks out at the sea again. The giant sea creatures do not venture into the bay of Tofino, from where the whale watch boats leave. The boats therefore drive tourists a few kilometers off the coast to the gray whale hiking trails. The animals move down the path into the calm, warm lagoons off the coast of Baja California in Mexico.

There they give birth to their young and nurse them for about two months. The Pacific off Mexico’s coasts is pleasantly tempered, clear, but low in oxygen and without plankton, which is why there is insufficient food for the animals in the long term.

So the whales swim thousands of kilometers up into the Bering Sea off Alaska. The conditions are reversed here: the water is cloudy, cold and enriched with a lot of oxygen. The perfect environment for the small animals that feed the marine mammals: krill.

In the fall, the whales swim all the way back to Mexico. The animals cover up to 20,000 kilometers a year – an eternal back and forth.

The animals present their offspring to tourists

Whalers once called the gray whale “devil fish”. “Because they could get pretty angry,” says Ronny Lamoureux and then adds a rhetorical question: “But if I speared you with a harpoon, you would be aggressive, wouldn’t you?”

In fact, gray whales are very gentle and curious. It is often the case that mother animals literally presented their young to people on boats.

Whale mother can be petted

Apparently, she is not shy: gray whales usually stay away from people. But this mother animal dares to get up close and enjoys the human pats.

“They are proud of their offspring,” says Lamoureux. As a boat captain at one of the companies that make a living from whale watch tourism in Tofino and Ucluelet, he knows what he’s talking about.

Whale watch tours in Tofino and Ucluelet

Change of scene, it’s Sunday, shortly after eight o’clock. There are a number of tourists in the harbor; they are excited because soon they will be very close to them, the gray whales.

It starts very slowly and comfortably, “we don’t want to wake anyone up,” whispers Captain Mark Sawyer. After all, “Jamie’s” are written in large letters on the hull of the boat. So people would know where to call to complain. Because most boats at the moorings all around would no longer drive, but would serve as a home for their owners.

“When we have passed the green buoy up there, we accelerate. Then let’s see what the open ocean has in store for us. “

Mark Sawyer works for “Jamie’s”, more precisely: for Jamie’s Whaling Station, which is present in Tofino and Ucluelet. Here visitors can book whale watch tours. There is room for eight people in Mark’s inflatable boat “Blue Thunder”. All are dressed thickly and are wearing a red protective suit over their own clothing to protect them from wind and waves.

A cool breeze is still blowing on the Pacific Rim this spring morning. But this is very practical for finding whales. Because on windy gusts the wind blows towards the whale watch tourists. “So pay attention to the water fountains,” the captain warns his customers.

Gray whales have two breathing holes on their heads, like all baleen whales. With gray whales, the air rises almost like a heart from the two holes, a fantastic spectacle.

Humpback whale jumps are a specialty

The green buoy has been reached. From here, no houseboats are anchored. Mark accelerates. As he steers the “Blue Thunder” out into the open ocean, his colleague Ashley Hoyland takes the lead. It is also packed thick. And she has to scream against the wind.

But Ashley already knows many questions from tourists. “Many people expect to see acrobatic whales jumping out of the water,” she says. However, such tricks are a specialty of humpback whales.

It is very difficult for gray whales. “You are the T-Rexe of the whales,” Ashley says. They only have very small pectoral fins. It is difficult for them to take off under water to catapult themselves out of the water.

Getting a gray whale in front of the lens, even if it doesn’t jump – that’s what the tourists on board hope for. And lo and behold: the first gray whale emerges, blows and dives comfortably again, just a little more than 100 meters in front of the boat.

For a few seconds, the back of his head and his back could be seen. “We welcome the whales and spring with them,” says Ashley.

In autumn, whales migrate past the coast of Canada

Gray whales cannot hold their breath as long as other whale species, at most 25 minutes. So they can’t doze any longer. The urge for air wakes her from her half-sleep. Then they have to rise to the surface of the water and take a breath – to the delight of the tourists.

And the nature lovers and the tourism industry in Ucluelet and Tofino are now trying to make the best of the cancellation of the Pacific Rim Whale Festival: At the moment, they are considering making up for the happening in autumn when the gray whales migrate again along the west coast of Canada, this time in the other direction, south, on the way to warmer waters.

Then locals and visitors would not welcome the whales, but say goodbye and wave after them.
